Chi no Ike Pond (Ruriho no Ike)

This is a legendary spot, where Kobo Daishi is said to have written a Buddhist sutra, which means that is a place where Dainichi-nyorai (Maha-Vairocana) had undertaken religious training. Kobo Daishi dug a pond to enshrine the sutra with a sacred gem when he transferred the temple buildings of Yashima Temple to the southern part. There is also a legend about a dragon coming to take away the sacred gem. It began to be called Chinoike (pond of blood) after the warriors who fought at Dannoura in the Genpei War washed their bloody swords in this pond.
